In this Section

Scholarship. Service. Leadership. Friendship.  These are the values found within fraternities and sororities at UW-Stout.  And since 1952, these Greek life groups have played an important role in the lives of thousands of students and alumni.

Fraternity and sorority involvement can be one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences during your college career.  You’ll meet others through social events, volunteer in the community, feel supported academically and grow interpersonally.  But so much more than that, it offers you a sense of belonging on campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

We get you have questions about joining a fraternity or sorority.  We have answers to some of the most common questions and misconceptions.

What's the time commitment?

Although time commitment varies between chapters, it’s recommended to ask each chapter more about their specific expectations. Members can expect some of the time commitments to include:

  • Weekly member meetings
  • Officer or new member meetings
  • Philanthropy or service events
  • Social events
  • Recruitment events
Do fraternities and sororities haze?

UW-Stout has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing.  Each chapter abides by strict anti-hazing policies from their inter/national organizations and local constitutions. Additionally, all organizations must adhere to the Stout Student Association’s Code of Conduct prohibiting hazing.

Any chapter that does participate in hazing will face losing its recognition and will not be allowed to operate on the UW-Stout campus.  Chapters recognize the seriousness of hazing and have implemented training into their member education programs.

Do chapters use alcohol?

As outlined in the Stout Student Association’s Code of Conduct, all student organizations, including fraternities and sororities, follow a strict alcohol policy.  Organizations may not host any organizational events where alcohol is present unless they are in accordance with third-party vendor guidelines.  Orgs must also hold all events at locations that allow entry to persons of any age and may not use organizational funds to purchase alcohol.  Above all of this, chapters have additional policies they must follow if affiliated with a national group.

Do members live in a chapter house?

While some members may choose to reside in the same residence after they've completed University Housing requirements, the chapters or university do not have any official houses.

How much will it cost?

Not all chapters have the same financial expectations and many have payment plans or scholarships available.  Members pay dues annually to the chapter and this money goes towards funding operations, social events, and programming for members. Some dues may go to inter/national organizations to provide additional resources like conferences, insurance, recruitment tools, and more.

Talk with individual chapters to learn about cost, payment plans, scholarships, and what the money helps support.
