UW-Stout's Bachelor of Science in Science Education degree prepares future science teachers for middle and high school levels. In this program, students customize their focus by selecting at least one major and one minor in the areas of Broadfield Science, biology, chemistry, physics, earth and space science, and environmental science.

The Science Education program leads to licensure in the Broadfield Science category. This licensure allows instructors to teach general science to students ages 10-21, with the exception of discrete courses in particular fields. As an example, a graduate would be licensed to teach physical science or life science in middle school or high school, but not biology or chemistry at the high school level.

You can also be certified for Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Add-on Certificates are also available for non-degree seeking students.

Preparing for Science Education

As a high school student, you should complete four years of math and one year each of biology, chemistry and physics. College preparatory English and basic computer and communication skills will also be helpful in your preparation for college. We strongly encourage you to pursue instructional experiences like being a tutor, working in study groups and participating in extra-curricular activities involving science or teaching.

Starting Out in Science Education

Your first semesters in the program include coursework in general education topics such as English, speech and math. You'll also start building your science content core and continue to build expertise in the sciences into your second year. In addition, you'll begin to study the theory and practice of teaching with courses in educational psychology and the foundations of education.

As You Progress

After your first two years, you'll focus on rounding out your scientific knowledge with further courses in the sciences. You'll also develop expertise in teaching theory and practice through coursework and fieldwork in areas of science curriculum and instruction, assessment, classroom management, multiculturalism, and the teaching profession.

Field experiences throughout your program will lead up to a full semester of student teaching in the classroom, working with a cooperating teacher. We encourage you to participate in teaching experiences both within and outside of the program, such as Science Olympiad and science fairs.

Admissions Requirements

New Freshmen

  • There are no additional requirements for new freshmen.

Transfer Students

  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher from the last institution attended.

Students who meet this requirement will be admitted to the university in their chosen Education major. Subsequent acceptance into a teacher education major and enrollment in professional education coursework will require successful completion of Benchmark I requirements. Additional information can be found at the School of Education website.

Students whose cumulative GPA is lower than the 2.75 will be reviewed and considered on a case-by-case basis for admission consideration.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences (InTASC Standard 1).
  2. Use an understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards (InTASC Standard 2).
  3. Work with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation (InTASC Standard 3).
  4. Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content (InTASC Standard 4).
  5. Understand how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues (InTASC Standard 5).
  6. Understand and use multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making (InTASC Standard 6).
  7. Plan instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context (InTASC Standard 7).
  8. Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways (InTASC Standard 8).
  9. Engage in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner (InTASC Standard 9).
  10. Seek appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession (InTASC Standard 10).

The program objectives are based on the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) Standards (2011), which have been adopted as the state teacher standards by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Science Teaching Certifications

The UW-Stout science education program offers science teaching certifications in Broadfield Science, biology, chemistry, and physics. These certifications have been approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Broadfield Science certification allows teachers to teach any science course up to grade 10 and any basic or general science course in grades 11 and 12. Biology, chemistry, and physics certifications are needed to teach those subject areas in grades 11 and 12.

Each certification can be taken as a teaching major certification or teaching minor certification.

Career Opportunities

Science education is a high-demand area. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education, science is classified as a teacher shortage area in the state of Wisconsin and most other states in the United States. In recent years concern over shortages, especially in mathematics and science, has seemed to reach new heights. The inability of schools to adequately staff classrooms with qualified teachers has received widespread coverage in the national media.
