Family Weekend | April 3-5, 2020

Every year hundreds of families visit our campus to experience the amazing talent of our students and to spend quality time with family. Try out our climbing wall, laugh with our comedian or watch students strut their stuff on the runway at the Fashion without Fabric fashion show. Whatever you choose, we hope you’ll make the visit to Menomonie to see what our Stout family is all about!

2020 Weekend Schedule 

We are still adding fun events to our Family Weekend schedule!  Check out a few things below that are already scheduled and stay tuned for more additions!

2020 Friday Events

8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Shop the Niche!
Location | Heritage Hall, 2nd floor

Browse the racks of UW-Stout's very own boutique! Run by students in the Retail and Merchandise Management program, this store offers a unique collection of apparel and goods for everyone.

8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Open Recreation at Urec
Location | 41 Sports and Fitness Center

Come check out the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) and feel free to use our 1/8 mile indoor track, golf room, or any of our courts for basketball, bean bags, badminton, volleyball, futsal, tennis or racquetball! Be sure to practice your bag skills in preparation for the tournament on Saturday! Free for students and their families!  *Students must attend with their family and present a current UW-Stout ID.  

11:00 am - 3:00 pm 
Guided Tours of the Mabel Tainter Center For the Arts
Location | 205 Main Street East, Menomonie

Visit the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts for a FREE guided tour of what CNN Travel has called "One of the 15 most spectacular theaters in the WORLD!" Tours will be held at the top and bottom of the hour with the last tour leaving at 2:30 pm.

Lunch at The Cedar Café
Location | Cedar Café, 2nd Floor, Heritage Hall

One of Stout’s unique gems, The Cedar Café is a live-action food production facility within The School of Hospitality Leadership.  The students plan, develop and execute foodservice skills and leadership techniques.  Come and enjoy a delicious lunch put on by the students. 

Tickets are limited and must be requested ahead of time. Families can request tickets beginning March 2nd.   Check back for the ticket request form..

A limited number of walk-ins may be accommodated that day.  Price of the tickets are TBA.

Rock Climbing at StoutAdventures
Location | 56 Sports & Fitness Center

Come on down to StoutAdventures and get climbing!  We have two 30ft climbing walls with 12 ropes, a bouldering wall, and over 50 routes to challenge all skill levels.  Whether you’re a new or experienced climber, all are welcome.  Free for students and their families!  *Students must attend with their family and present a current UW-Stout ID.

Stop by the lower level of the MSC for some free family photo booth fun!

Film Festival and Exhibition
Location | The Terrace, Memorial Student Center

Aspiring student filmmakers from across campus are invited to create a short cinematic adaptation of any published piece of literature. Stop by our red-carpet premiere featuring the top three original student-made film adaptations.

The corresponding gallery exhibition will give families a chance to talk with students as they share the results of their literature research.

Beyond the Stage | UW-Stout Student Drawing Exhibition

Beyond the Stage is a collection of drawings created by Honors Drawing 2 students that explore the decorative grandeur and unique architectural qualities of Menomonie's own Mabel Tainter theatre. Through traditional media and techniques, the artworks capture each artists' individual perspective as well as the uninterrupted interior spaces of the historic theatre. The timeless drawings celebrate the architectural importance and beauty of the Mabel Tainter. Stop by to admire the work and visit with the artists.

University Theatre Presents Godspell the Musical
Location | Harvey Hall Theatre
Tickets | $15 adults/$10 Stout students/$8 under 12.

With music by Stephen Schwartz, composer of the smash hit musical Wicked, Godspell the Musical retells the parables from the Gospel of Matthew with a tuneful folk-rock score.

Tickets go on sale in March and can be purchased online, at the door, or at the Service Center.

Cafe Canvas | Sip & Paint
Location | The Terrace, Memorial Student Center

Everyone can be an artist! Come enjoy a guided canvas painting class and enjoy coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The class will be facilitated by our art education students in the National Art Education Association. Facilitators will go through step by step as you make your creation. Class is free and only open to the first 70 people to register!  Registration is required to secure your spot and will open March 2nd. Check back for the registration link.

Protect Yourself | Where do germs really come from?
Location | Heritage Hall, Room 371

Join Dr. Taejo Kim, Professor in the Food and Nutrition Department, for a hands-on demonstration about foodborne pathogens.  Dr. Kim will demonstrate with participants how germs and bacteria grow.   Samples will be collected and participants will have a chance to experiment and learn how bacteria like listeria and salmonella grow.

Dr. Kim invented an easy-to-use assay kit for salmonella and listeria spp and serves as a consultant for food processors and teaches in the Department of Food and Nutrition.  He has collaborated with numerous universities and federal agencies preparing grant proposals that have been funded for over $2 million.

Join us for a family friendly afternoon of Candy Bar Bingo!  Enjoy popcorn, lemonade and of course, candy bars for those who win! There will be two rounds, one beginning at 1:00 pm and one at 2:00 pm.  Free for all to play!

Education Abroad Experience

If you've ever thought about studying abroad or going on National Student Exchange, learn more with the entire family at one of our presentations! Learn about all your options, how to apply, costs, and important deadlines. Start thinking about studying abroad/away during Family Weekend.

Bean Bag Tournament
Location | 41 Sports and Fitness Center

Come test out your bag skills and compete for an Intramural Championship shirt! This will include a pool-play and single elimination tournament.  Families can show up that day or call ahead to Urec at 715-232-1392 to reserve a spot. Free for students and their families!  *Students must attend with their family and present a current UW-Stout ID.  Contact Kyle Pearson with any questions.

Fashion Without Fabric Show

Fashion Without Fabric has become a yearly sensation.  At the show, the audience can take pleasure in the atmosphere and entertainment of a fashion show unlike any other.  Stout’s own art and design students will employ creativity to produce unique fashions using anything and everything but fabric.

Check back soon for when ticket sales will open.  They can be purchased online or at the Service Center.  Hurry, as they sell out quickly!  Limited seating in overflow may be available day of. Check with the Service Center in the MSC.

UW-Stout Escape Room 

That's right, UW-Stout has it's very own escape room!  While on a tour of Jurassic Industries, the UW System’s premier living-dinosaur research facility, a security emergency leaves the park powerless. With limited staff, you are the only hope at restoring the power before the back-up generators run out, releasing dinosaurs from their enclosures into the Menomonie community! Can you save our campus and restore power in time?

We will be excited to offer a limited number of time slots throughout Family Weekend.  Check back soon for dates, times and registration information.

Tickets are $5/students and $10/community. ***If you register and plan to participate with your student please purchase your tickets at the student rate for your entire group.
