Monitoring Academics

As a student, your academic progress is monitored each semester you're enrolled at the university. In order to earn an undergraduate degree from UW-Stout, students must complete their degree requirements with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 - 2.75, depending on the degree program. It is not in the best interest of the student, nor the university, to let them continue their studies indefinitely if they are not achieving at the minimal level.

Contacting the Correct Dean

Academic Deans are affiliated with a specific college or school and assist students with issues or concerns related to their academic experience, grades, instructors, etc. If you seek help in any of these issues, please contact the Academic Dean of your college.

Probation

Academic probation is a temporary status due to low academic grades. This policy is in place to warn students that they are not meeting minimal academic standards and that improvement is necessary for continued enrollment in the university. A student is placed on probation if their cumulative GPA is lower than 2.0, conditionally admitted as a transfer or new freshman, or re-admitted after leaving UW-Stout while on probation or when dismissed for academic reasons. For more information on the university's policies, please refer to Registration and Records

Withdrawal

Withdrawals (dropping all classes for the term) can be completed anytime during the semester after classes begin, but must be requested before evaluation week begins (fall/spring terms only) or before the class has ended. Withdrawals should be undertaken only after serious consideration and completed using the proper withdrawal procedure. For more information on the withdrawal process, please refer to Registration and Records

Review tuition payment information and refund schedules to make sure appropriate charges and payments are assessed.

Dismissal

Academic dismissal occurs when a student's Grade Point Average (GPA) falls below minimum requirements established by the university.

If circumstances were so unusual and out-of-the-ordinary that academic performance was significantly and temporarily impacted, the dismissal decision may be appealed.

Academic Dismissal Criteria

Termination of enrollment in the University of Wisconsin-Stout due to one of the following conditions:

  • Cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 at the end of two successive semesters.
    • If a student earns a 2.50 or higher GPA with 12 or more earned credits in the 1st semester of Academic Probation, but the cumulative GPA is below 2.00 for 2 successive semesters, the student will be granted an additional or second semester on Academic Probation.
  • GPA for one semester is less than 1.000. Academic Probation status is not a prerequisite for dismissal due to this low GPA.
