Name: Brittany Jordan

Hometown: Wisconsin Rapids

Majors: Digital marketing technology; cross-media graphics management

Awards, honors: I am the first at UW-Stout, and some say first in the world, to graduate in the new digital marketing technology major.

Why did you choose UW-Stout? UW-Stout was buried in my mind because my uncle graduated from here in 2005. In high school I was heavily involved in graphic design courses and knew that eventually I wanted a career that had the best of both the design and marketing fields. When I heard that UW-Stout had graphics programs that weren't just graphic design I was completely sold. Not only did I want to continue the family tradition, but during my tour I was already networking with on-campus jobs and making connections right off the bat. UW-Stout was the only college that I applied for and I would do it all again if I could.

What are the biggest challenges you faced in earning your degree? It was simply asking for help. I have always been someone who likes to do things on my own and to understand things without having to ask a lot of questions. The hardest thing for me to overcome was to simply reach out and not be afraid to ask for help when I was struggling. Once I broke out of my shell, I was able to comfortably approach my professors and get the assistance I needed to move forward.

What stands out among your college experiences? It’s the job experience I get to take with me when I graduate. I’ve had an on-campus job at the library as a website and publications assistant since I was a freshman. This semester, I was promoted to an LTE position as a computing support technician. I also had two internships that provided outstanding project-oriented work that I can use in my career. I got to balance the best of both print advertising and digital marketing with my two majors during each of my internships. I can successfully graduate and say that I have four-plus years of relative work experience when I apply to companies.

What’s next? I am in the final interview process looking to secure a position in the digital marketing field before the end of December. Until then, I am going to take a much-needed break and spend some quality time with my family for the holidays.
