The Fostering Success program at UW Stout provides services specifically designed to aid former foster youth in transitioning to and through college. Students eligible for Fostering Success have experienced one of the following:
- Foster home
- Residential care center
- Group home
- Court-ordered placement with a relative
- Adoption
- Orphan/ward of the court
- Homelessness
- Guardianship
- Other out-of-home care, not specified above
Students Attending UW-Stout
The Fostering Success program provides intentional support and community, as well as information about resources and available grants and scholarships. Fostering Success also helps connect its students to numerous leadership and involvement opportunities available on and off campus, other students, organizations, or other opportunities so that our students can make the most of their college experience.

Connecting Youth to Campus
Fostering Success offers a summer on-campus experience for high school age foster youth who are interested in higher education. Topics explored during this experience include:

Students in the Fostering Success are eligible for TRIO Student Support Services (SSS)

- A dedicated TRIO SSS Advisor to assist with your Individual Student Success Plan (ISSP) goals in the areas of academic, financial, career and personal
- Assistance with FAFSA and Scholarship Applications
- Writing and Math Specialists
- Peer Tutoring

- Personal, Intercultural and Leadership Development Opportunities
- Graduate School Preparation
- Tuition waived TRIO SSS 1-credit courses: Strategies for Academic Success and Strategies for Successful Career Development

TRIO Student Support Services offers supplemental peer tutoring support for a variety of courses ranging from Engineering and Computer Science to English and Speech writing. They also employee Master level specialists to oversee their peer tutoring staff and assist students as well.

Students also have access to the online tutoring service Brainfuse, where they can get tutoring in a variety of subjects.
When accepted into TRIO Student Support Services, students are assigned a TRIO advisor who works like a navigator through college. Advisors help support the students in their pursuit of academic, financial, career and personal goals.

The advisement center is a campus resource for students in the areas of academic advising, career exploration, and student development. Students are split into their major fields to best help the student navigate through college. You can find a list of current staff here.
Faculty Advisors
Students are assigned a faculty advisor beginning their second year of college (unless they are a transfer student who is undeclared). Students can check who their advisor is using EAB Navigate.
Mentor link is a program where students can connect with volunteer upper-class peers for guidance, study tips, and guidance on how to get involved on campus.
The Child and Family Study Center is a university ran education laboratory school. The program commits itself to creating links between educational theory and hands-on practice. Stout students from undergraduate and graduate courses can observe, participate, develop research, and execute lessons under the guidance of experienced and highly qualified educators. The center operates in accordance with the University Calendar. For participant’s convenience, The center also provides a Center Calendar for parents and families.

The Fostering Success program employees a team of peer mentors and a graduate assistant over the course of the academic year. It also provides summer camp advisor jobs for its summer camps.
