Welcome to UW-Stout! As the family member, support person or friend of an incoming first-year student, we know you may have many questions. We want to help aid you and your student as they transition to Stout.
Our Multicultural Student Services (MSS) provides programs and services to support Asian American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Indigenous, biracial and multiethnic students with academic, career, cultural, leadership and personal support and development. MSS also provides a gathering space and opportunities for students to connect, talk, study and relax.
Consider having your student participate in the MSS Stoutward Bound program.
MSS also provides a living and learning community through our Stoutward Bound (SWB) program for incoming first-year students.
Stoutward Bound offers meaningful interactions and experiences designed around academic success, campus connections and a sense of community.
As a Stoutward Bound Scholar, your student will be a part of a supportive living and learning community that will prepare them for success and help them transition from high school to college.
It consists of a two-week early start program, first-year support and continuous guidance throughout your student's educational journey. They will meet other incoming first-year students, build confidence and learn to navigate campus.
"Stoutward Bound helped me to adjust to college because we were able to participate in a two-week class before everyone else started, so that definitely took away the anxiety and stress about starting college class and how professors were. It definitely helped me out at the beginning of the year," said Angelina Garcia, 2021 SWB cohort.
We encourage you to talk with your student about this opportunity. Learn more about the program and apply.
