Students in the McNair Scholars Program and Student Support Services programs from around the U.S. will receive help with preparing for graduate school and hear from two inspirational speakers during a special event.
The McNair/Student Support Services Graduate School Retreat will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
The featured speaker and presenter will be Donald Asher, a national authority on the graduate school admissions process and author of numerous books on the subject.
Also scheduled to speak at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, is U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, from Wisconsin’s 4th District. A graduate of Marquette University, thanks in part to federal TRIO program support, she became in 2004 the first African-American woman from Wisconsin elected to Congress.
More than 300 students and staff from Wisconsin and 13 other states, including public and private universities and colleges, have registered, according to Sarah Wynn, director of UW-Stout’s McNair Scholars Program and the event co-chair. Registration closed Sept. 16.
From UW-Stout, 14 students and three staff members plan to attend, representing McNair, ASPIRE-Student Support Services and Multicultural Student Services.
Conference topics for students will include the value of going to graduate school, selecting the right program, applying, funding and taking the Graduate Record Exam.
McNair and Student Support Services, two U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs, provide services to first-generation, limited-income and underrepresented students who are interested in pursuing undergraduate degrees, conducting scholarly research and eventually attending graduate school.
