First-Year Experience

The First-Year Experience (FYE) is dedicated to supporting new students as they transition into life at UW-Stout. The university provides a comprehensive suite of programs and services designed to help first-year students succeed in their academic, social, and personal lives.

The First-Year Experience is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where all first-year students can thrive. Our goal is to help students build a strong foundation for their academic and professional journeys, ensuring they are well-prepared for the unique challenges and opportunities of a polytechnic education.

Meet the Director

Hello! Welcome to Stout. My name is Britta Miller and I am a proud UW-Stout alumni and professional staff member. I have worked at Stout for 16 years in admissions, advising, orientation, and now in my current role as Director of First Year Experience. My passion and mission is to help new students transition to Stout and find their place in our campus community. I look forward to serving both our new students and their supporters.

Programs and Services

Stout offers a variety of programs and services to assist new students in their transition to campus.

Orientation Programs

We kick off the academic year with a robust Orientation Program that welcomes new students and helps them acclimate to campus life. This multi-day event includes informative sessions and social activities, all aimed at easing the transition to college life and building a strong sense of community.

First Year Seminars

Our First-Year Seminars are designed to introduce students to the intellectual and academic environment of our institution. These seminars cover a wide range of topics and are taught by experienced faculty members, providing students with the opportunity to engage with the campus services, learn more about themselves, and become engaged members of our campus community.

Support Services

Stout offers a variety of support services tailored to the needs of first-year students. From academic advising and tutoring to career counseling and wellness resources, we ensure that students have access to the tools and guidance they need to navigate their first year successfully.

Peer Mentorship

Mentorlink, our peer mentorship program, pairs first-year students with experienced upperclassmen who provide guidance, support, and friendship. These mentors help new students navigate academic challenges, explore campus resources, and get involved in extracurricular activities.

Community Engagement

We encourage students to participate in our 150+ campus organizations, events, student jobs, and leadership opportunities that enhance their college experience and contribute to their personal growth.
